Serious Resurfacing

Atlanta CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing with

You cannot erase structural wrinkles with a lunchtime facial that promises minimal downtime.

The aesthetic industry loves to sell the idea of a painless laser that miraculously tightens skin while you run errands. That isn't how biology works. If you want to achieve true facial rejuvenation and erase decades of sun damage, deep lip lines, and crepey eyelid skin, you have to create a controlled injury severe enough to force your body to rebuild itself.

That is what a CO2 laser does. It is not a spa treatment. It is an ablative laser and a serious surgical tool. It requires real downtime, and it looks intense while it heals. But in my clinical experience, CO2 laser skin resurfacing is the only non-surgical device that actually takes five to ten years off your face.

What is CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing?

The Gold Standard for Deep Remodeling

CO2 laser skin resurfacing is an ablative procedure that uses targeted carbon dioxide laser energy to vaporize the damaged top layer of skin. It simultaneously drives heat into the deeper layers to stimulate collagen production, forcing the body to generate flawless new skin cells.

What are the benefits of CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Erasing, Not Just Fading

We don't use this laser skin device to give you a temporary glow. We use it for heavy lifting to dramatically improve your skin quality.

  • Deep Rhytid Eradication: It physically vaporizes deep wrinkles and severe wrinkles, like smoker's lines around the mouth and heavy crow's feet.
  • Scar Revision: It is highly effective at leveling out pitted acne scars and deep scars by remodeling the tissue beneath them.
  • Tone and Texture: It strips away sun-damaged skin, removing age spots, brown spots, and other pigmentation problems. It levels out uneven texture to reveal incredibly smooth, rejuvenated skin.
  • Skin Tightening: The heat from the laser literally shrinks the collagen fibers, tightening crepey, sagging skin on the lower eyelids and cheeks.

Am I a candidate for CO2 Laser?

Why I Say No to Many Patients

Because this is an aggressive laser peel, it is not for everyone. I am extremely strict about who I put under this device. The risks of operating on the wrong skin tone are severe.

I will turn you away if:

1.

You Have Darker Skin: CO2 lasers create intense heat. In darker skin tones or very dark skin (Fitzpatrick IV-VI), this heat triggers melanocytes to overproduce pigment, leading to permanent skin discoloration (hyperpigmentation). If you have a darker skin profile, we will discuss safer other treatments like microneedling with radiofrequency. Lighter skin tones are the safest candidates for this specific device.

2.

You Have Active Breakouts: If you have active acne, dragging a laser over it can spread infection across the treated area. We must clear the acne first. We will also review your full medical history; a recent history of Accutane is a hard stop because your skin cannot heal properly.

3.

You Cannot Commit to the Downtime: If you tell me you have a wedding in five days, I will not treat you. You have to be willing to follow strict skin care protocols for a week to achieve optimal results.

Your CO2 Laser Treatment

Managing the Ouch Factor

People always ask if the laser skin resurfacing procedure hurts. Yes, it's spicy. You are vaporizing the outer layer of your skin.

But we don't expect you to grit your teeth and bear it. In a medspa, they might just give you a topical numbing cream. That isn't enough for a heavy CO2 setting. In my practice, we use a combination of medical-grade topical numbing, local anesthetic nerve blocks, and oral medication.

If we are doing a very deep treatment covering the entire face, or combining the laser with a facelift, you will be under twilight sedation or general anesthesia. You won't feel a thing.

When you wake up, it feels like an intense, throbbing sunburn. We immediately apply cooling agents and a thick, moist dressing (like Aquaphor) to soothe the nerve endings and protect the raw tissue.

Recovery after CO2 Laser Resurfacing

The Aquaphor Helmet Phase

This is not a weekend recovery. You need to set realistic expectations for the healing process.

The Timeline:

  • Days 1-3 (The Raw Phase): Your face will be red, swollen, and oozing clear fluid. You will look scary. You must keep your skin coated in a thick layer of ointment at all times to promote faster healing. If the skin dries out, it scabs, and scabs lead to scars.
  • Days 4-7 (The Peeling Phase): The swelling goes down, and the dead skin cells start to slough off. It will feel incredibly tight and itchy. You will use diluted vinegar soaks to keep the area clean.
  • Day 10: Most of the peeling is done. The new skin underneath is baby-soft and bright pink. At this point, many patients can usually start wearing mineral makeup.
  • Weeks 3-6: The pinkness slowly fades.

Pro-Tip:

Stay out of the sun. Period. Your new skin has absolutely zero defense against UV rays. If you get direct sun exposure during the first month, you will develop pigmentation issues. Hats and physical SPF are mandatory.

CO2 Laser Results

The Six-Month Reveal

When the peeling stops at day 10, your skin will look infinitely better, but the real magic happens deep underground. The laser energy we drilled into your dermis has triggered a massive healing cascade. Over the next three to six months, your body lays down entirely new, tightly woven collagen networks.

You will notice your skin continuing to improve, fine lines and smooth out long after the redness is gone, revealing truly younger-looking skin.

Longevity

For most patients seeking deep wrinkle removal, you can achieve your goals with just one treatment. Lighter, fractional settings might require multiple treatments spaced months apart. The skin resurfacing results are permanent in the sense that we have permanently eradicated your past damaged skin cells. However, you will continue to age naturally from this new, improved baseline.

Cost of CO2 Laser Resurfacing

Pricing the Depth

When patients do a laser skin resurfacing comparison search online, they get confused by the prices. The cost of CO2 laser skin resurfacing in Atlanta varies wildly because resurfacing can mean anything from a light 10-micron pass to a heavy 100-micron deep ablation.

Your treatment plan and price depend on the depth required to fix your specific anatomy and whether we are doing this awake in the clinic or asleep in the operating room. It is generally more expensive than chemical peels or standard deep peels, but the laser resurfacing results are vastly superior. We will give you an exact, transparent quote during your consultation.

Why Choose Atlanta Plastic Surgery?

Lasers Are Surgical Tools, Not Toys

Handing a powerful ablative laser to an inexperienced technician is incredibly dangerous.

Dr. Mirzabeigi’s Perspective:

I am a board-certified plastic surgeon. I understand the exact thickness of the skin on different parts of your face. The skin on your lower eyelid is paper-thin; the skin on your chin is thick and sebaceous. You cannot use the same laser setting on both without either under-treating the chin or permanently scarring the eyelid.

I approach skin resurfacing with the same precision I apply to surgery. I control the depth and the heat perfectly to ensure we destroy the skin imperfections without destroying your underlying anatomy. When you want serious remodeling, you need a surgical standard of care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does CO2 laser fix acne scars?

Yes. For deep, pitted scars, fractional CO2 is one of the only treatments that can physically smooth the borders of the scar and lift the depression from beneath by stimulating deep collagen production.

Can it remove stretch marks?

While it can improve the texture of stretch marks, it rarely erases them completely. We generally reserve CO2 for the face and neck, as body skin heals differently and carries a higher risk of scarring.

When is the best time of year to do this?

Fall and winter. You must avoid sun exposure before and after the treatment. Trying to recover from a CO2 laser during an Atlanta summer is a recipe for hyperpigmentation.

Will it thin my skin out?

No. It actually does the exact opposite. By forcing your body to create new collagen, the dermis becomes thicker, stronger, and more elastic over the next six months.

Can I just get my eyes done?

Absolutely. We frequently perform peri-ocular co2 laser resurfacing just around the eyes to tighten crepey lower lids and erase crow's feet. It is a brilliant alternative to lower eyelid surgery if your main issue is skin, not fat.
